Coronavirus outbreak: 2 new cases confirmed in India

The two patients, one from Delhi and Telangana each, are stable and are being closely monitored.

Two new cases of the novel coronavirus were confirmed in India on March 2.

One case each was reported from New Delhi and the state of Telangana.

 

Both patients are stable and are being closely monitored, news agency ANI has reported.

The person from Delhi had travelled to Italy, the Union Health Ministry said adding that he is being treated at the RML hospital in the national capital.

The other person with coronavirus infection has a travel history to Dubai, the ministry added.

According to news agency PTI, the person in Delhi had self-reported at the RML hospital while the one in Telangana had initially gone to a private hospital and then was referred to a government hospital in the state.

The virus, now known as COVID-19, has infected over 89,000 people globally and caused more than 3,000 deaths.

As many as 25,738 people are under community surveillance across the country, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said as he advised people to avoid non-essential travel to Iran, Italy, South Korea and Singapore.

The minister further said the Indian government is in discussion with Iran and Italian authorities to evacuate Indians there.

Vardhan said that so far 3,217 samples have been tested out of which five tested positive for COVID-19 while reports of 23 are awaited. Italy is reeling under swelling cases of the coronavirus disease.

Three days ago, Kerala's Health Minister, KK Shailaja had announced that three students who had earlier tested positive for coronavirus, have now been cured.

"We succeeded in the first part, that of containing coronavirus. Three students who were found to be corona-positive were isolated, now they are stable. They were cured," Shailaja had said.

A 24-year-old techie from Bengaluru has tested positive for the Covid-19 disease, or coronavirus, in Hyderabad where he arrived on a bus. Several people he interacted with, including his fellow bus passengers, are now being tracked down and placed under watch

The man who tested positive for the Covid-19 disease, or coronavirus, in Telangana has been identified as a 24-year-old techie from Bengaluru. The man tested positive for coronavirus in Hyderabad and has now been placed under isolation. His is one of the two new fresh cases of coronavirus reported in India on Tuesday. Earlier, three students had tested positive in Kerala; all were discharged after treatment.

On Monday, the Telangana health minister confirmed that a 24-year-old techie from Bengaluru had tested positive for coronavirus in Hyderabad. He had travelled to Hyderabad on a bus. The government is now tracking down and placing under watch his fellow bus passengers.

"He initially stayed in the Mahendrahills area of Hyderabad and was later admitted to Apollo Hospital. Yesterday evening, he was referred to the Gandhi Hospital where he was found positive for Covid-19. Later, a separate report from a lab in Pune confirmed that he was infected by coronavirus," Telangana health minister Etela Rajender said on Monday.

The minister also said that the government has identified around 80 people who were in contact with the techie. These include his fellow bus passengers, family, doctors and staff of Apollo Hospital. All of them will be placed under watch for symptoms of coronavirus.

'We have also shared details of his company and of the bus with our counterparts in Karnataka," Rajender said, adding that the government is fully prepared to deal with the threat of coronavirus.

Covid-19 first originated in China and has since spread to more than 65 countries. According to a tally by news agency Reuters, there have been over 89,000 cases of the virus globally, the majority in China. The illness has killed more than 3,000 people as of Monday. Caused by a 'novel' form of coronavirus, there is no vaccine or treatment of Covid-19 yet.
