Lock down extended till 3 May

Prime Minister Narendra Modi says the lock down has been extended till 3 May, and that coronavirus should be curbed at every level. Even if one person dies due to coronavirus, he noted that "Our tension should increase. That is why hotspots have to be surveilled with extended vigilance, and take harsh steps to curb spread of coronavirus. If new hotspots arrive, our efforts will face problems."

Lockdown extension, more stringent measures: PM Modi's speech in 5 points

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the lockdown imposed to battle the coronavirus would be extended till May 3, and expressed gratitude to Indians for the sacrifices they had made so far.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the lockdown imposed to battle the coronavirus would be extended till May 3, and expressed gratitude to Indians for the sacrifices they had made so far.

A new coronavirus causing a respiratory disease called Covid-19 has killed tens of thousands of people worldwide in a pandemic described by the UN as the most challenging global crisis since the Second World War. The virus, known as SARS-CoV-2, has sickened over 10,000 people in India and killed 339.

Here is a 5-point summary of PM Modi's remarks.

1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a three-week extension of the ongoing lock down (till May 3) in his second address to the nation since the shutdown began on March 25.

2. More stringent measures will be implemented until April 20, and efforts taken by local administrations to implement the SOP will be evaluated. If there are positive developments, conditional concessions can be made -- but setbacks will result in a rollback of such concessions. Detailed guidelines will be issued tomorrow.

3. PM Modi said India had more 1 lakh beds and over 600 hospitals for treating corona virus patients. He said these facilities were being expanded.

4. He discussed his government's efforts to contain the virus, saying India began screening flight passengers from affected countries when it had no cases itself, and required people returning from abroad to observe a 14-day isolation period even before its caseload reached 100. India, he said, took swift decisions without waiting for the problem to escalate.

5. PM Modi acknowledged the difficulties faced by Indians during the lock down and expressed gratitude for their sacrifice.

India has fought corona virus better than developed countries, says Modi

India had started screening at airports and 14-day isolation for those coming from abroad, well in advance, announced Narendra Modi while addressing the nation on Tuesday. "We decided to implement this 21-day lockdown when we had only about 500 cases." he said.

"You have been a witness to how India has fought corona virus as compared to other countries," he added. Modi noted that it was unfair to compare with any other country. However, we cannot deny some realities. "It is true that India is in much better position than some of the developed countries," he said.
