Wuhan to test city's entire 11 million population for COVID-19

Wuhan, the Chinese city where the deadly novel corona virus emerged in December last year, has decided to test the city's entire 11 million population after new cases were reported for the first time in weeks, sparking fears of the second wave of the virus attack.

The city has prepared a 10-day plan to test all its residents after six new corona virus cases were reported in a residential community, official media reported on Tuesday.

Hubei province and its capital Wuhan on 8 April lifted a prolonged lock down clamped on 23 January as the disease spread through the region like wildfire.

Coronavirus updates: China to test entire Wuhan population as cluster of cases emerge

The cluster of new virus cases in Wuhan is stoking fears of a second wave.

A pandemic of the novel coronavirus has now killed more than 288,000 people worldwide.

More than 4.2 million people across the globe have been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new respiratory virus, according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The actual numbers are believed to be much higher due to testing shortages, many unreported cases and suspicions that some governments are hiding the scope of their nations' outbreaks.

 

Since the first cases were detected in China in December, the United States has become the worst-affected country, with more than 1.3 million diagnosed cases and at least 81,076 deaths.
