The US Mission to the UN called for a meeting on Hong Kong at the Security Council on Wednesday following the recent escalation in tensions in the city over a Beijing-proposed national security legislation. China said it "categorically rejects the baseless request," adding that the legislation for Hong Kong is “purely China's internal affairs."

Background on the current situation in Hong Kong

- Violent clashes between the police and protesters took place in the past few days
- The clashes erupted following Beijing’s proposal of a national security legislation
- The move follows last year's pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong and seeks to ban secession, foreign interference, terrorism and all seditious activities aimed at toppling the central government
- Opponents say the law will curtail freedom enjoyed by the former British Colony under the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration
