According to multiple outlets, including The Associated Press and The Washington Post, the chemical irritants used by officers on Monday to disperse protesters at Lafayette Square are classified as tear gas by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At the time of the incident, witnesses and media on the scene reported that police deployed tear gas before President Trump walked across the street to St John’s Church for a photo, but The White House later denied that any tear gas was used.
