STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.-- Police have identified a man discovered unconscious and unresponsive Saturday by a passerby at Cedar Grove Beach in New Dorp.

The body of Jagadeesh Koppanati, 27, was spotted at about 6 a.m. along the shoreline of the beach, prompting a 911 call and a police response to the area, an NYPD spokesman said Sunday.

The cause of death remained unknown and will be determined by a medical examiner, police said.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Friday evening was the last time Jagadeesh Koppanati spoke to his roommate in New Jersey before turning up dead on a Staten Island beach about 12 hours later.

A passerby discovered the body of the 27-year-old man at about 6 a.m. Saturday on the shoreline at Cedar Grove Beach in the New Dorp area of Staten Island’s East Shore, according to an NYPD spokesman.

The deceased’s roommate in Edison, N.J., told the Advance/SILive.com that Koppanati didn’t specify where he was going when he left their house Friday, but was dressed in a pandemic mask and gloves.

“I felt like he was going out for a party or something like that,” said the roommate, who asked his name not be published.

He asked Koppanati teasingly if he was going to see a girl, to which his friend replied: “No, brother.”

Upon conducting his own investigation of what might have happened, the roommate said he’s since found a receipt for an Uber ride Friday evening to an address on Colony Avenue in Midland Beach. The address was located a few blocks from the shoreline, and about two-and-a-half miles from where he was later found.

Without any known connections on Staten Island, it wasn’t clear why Koppanati would have traveled to the borough, the roommate said.

An NYPD investigation remained ongoing Monday as authorities await the results of an autopsy by the city’s medical examiner.

‘THIS IS GOING TO BE DEVASTATING'

After relocating to the U.S. from India, Koppanati earned a master’s degree in Fremont, Calif., before getting a job as a consultant software engineer in New Jersey. He had a few friends on the East and West coasts, but no family in the U.S., the roommate said.

Koppanati was described as a quiet, polite and a “normal guy” who helped with landscaping and other projects around the house.

“He was a very, very nice guy,” the roommate said. “This is going to be devastating for [his family].”

Don't want to speculate, but I think someone lured him - most likely drugs  and jumped off with money.
