Snoring is not just a nighttime habit, but is an indication of a serious underlying health condition. Not only that, it can result in irritability and fatigue.

A large majority of people, especially men regularly snore in their sleep. Light snoring after a long tiring day is still understandable, but if it is an everyday affair then it is crucial to take necessary actions. Snoring loudly can be a sign of sleep apnea, a potentially dangerous sleep disorder in which your breathing suddenly stops and then starts while you are asleep. Luckily, researchers have found an interesting way that can help you stop snoring at night.

As per a 2017 study carried out by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, standing more throughout the day or by moving your legs while sitting can help you stop snoring at night.

For the study, researchers recruited 16 people who used to snore regularly and were healthy. First, they measured the participants’ fluid volume in their calves and then asked them to sit for four hours. At night, they measured their snoring.

In the second test, the researchers asked half of the volunteers to press their feet against pedals to keep their calf muscles active when they were sitting all day long, while the other half were asked to sit normally like we do while working. A week later, they switched the group and carried out the same activity. All this time, the researchers kept a close track of the volunteers' snoring habit.

In the end, it was observed that the participants who pedalled all day long snored less at night as compared to those who sat ideal.

The reason behind this is the excess of fluid retention in the leg, which happens by sitting all day long. Excess of fluid in the calves makes your windpipe or esophagus narrow. Due to this, the air moves faster in the throat at night causing vibration and leads to snoring.

There are some easy home remedies as well that are known to be effective in snoring. It can lead to a quiet night for you as well as your loved ones.

Ginger and honey tea

Sipping a warm cup of ginger honey tea before going to bed is a fool-proof way to get relief from snoring. Ginger has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which increases saliva secretion and soothes your throat, thereby providing relief from snoring.

Pineapple, bananas and oranges

Pineapple, banana and oranges increase the amount of melatonin in the body, which is helpful in improving the quality of sleep at night. Melatonin is a hormone which makes us sleepy and having these fruits even in a small amount before going to bed can be effective.

Extra virgin olive oil

Extra virgin olive oil is not only good for cooking food, but can also help to smoothen up the airways. Sipping some olive oil before going to bed can prevent the throat muscles from blocking the throat at night.
