She just got out of a bad breakup. She got into a controlling relationship with him. He had anger issues and apparently they used to fight a lot and he physically abused her. He promised to control his anger and work on his issues but never did. She had her own issues with smoking, etc. He used her past relationships as a leverage to gain control over her. He felt that he is giving life to her and expected to be grateful to him. She became scared of him and felt that this relationship will not work and decided to move on. Probably staying in home for 8 months without going out much would have made this worse.
