We used to have cows in my home in India long time ago when I was kid...we also had 2 oxen for labor work....my family especially my grandpa and uncles used to eat beef once a while...we used to call it as Yeddhu koora...but what I know is that the meat is from Ox, not cow though...

I will tell what my grand father told me in my childhood.. 

People will not eat Cow for reason being most of the families consider it as an additional family member. Pet is entirely different, it is okay to eat Buffalo or OX  but it will be consumed only when the family is in deep economical crisis and you do not have other option of getting proteins, it is something directly related to your social status. My grandfather says if you are eating beef means you r financially screwed & living low life.
