Spiritual: cow gives milk..and only mothers give milk so it is treated as Mother and you cannot cut and eat mother.

Scientific: Cows and pigs have lots of fat which blocks arteries that can lead to heart attacks and other diseases.

Why beef not preferred ante cows are goddess kaamadhenu... secondly most households had one in their house. They provided milk and some were used to till the land. So it was beneficial to many people. You don’t chop the hand that feeds you. They are also very friendly so people get attached to them.

good analysis ...

my take on this ...

1. Cow - gives milk .... as some other dbians said ... it is as good and equivalent as mothers milk ... (to certain extent)

milk  --> yougrt --> butter --> ghee

2. Cow reproduces and give other cows ... so the number of cows multiples ...

3. Male cow / Ox  --> used to plough the soil ...

4. Ox used for travel .... Bullock Cart

5. Ox can bring water from well and can irrigate the farm ... from the farm comes rice the food ...

6. cow dung is used as fuel to cook food ...

7. at the time of funeral also pidakalu cow dung cakes are used as fuel to burn the body ( from movies u can see face is the last part covered on funeral pile ... with pidaka though ...

so ... all in all from birth to death ... and well being in life ( as it gives food, travel machine (cart), and bio-fuel (to cook) .. cow was central to rural indian life  (99.999% of people) ... so it was essential tool for the survival of human life ... so rather to keep cows alive, a fear factor, spiritual factor were added to not harm cows in any forms ...

now the conditions being changed ... the above mentioned things not much in to play ...

so current 'cow worship' is just a political propaganda ...

What about chicken? People raise chicken for eggs.. and Sheep and Goats as well for milk and wool... right? Why do they kill them for meat while they don’t kill cows?

Hindus treat cows as sacred animals unlike sheep, goats, chickens, etc...people usually do poojas regularly and when we had cows in my home some years ago, at least 2-3 families used to visit every Saturday to offer poojas to the cows... so inka klupthamga cheppalante Aavu ni poojistharu hindus...

Goats and chicken won’t listen to you. They are of minimal use in farming too.  Vaatini penchadame meat kosam mostly. Also goat and chicken reproduce faster. Goat will give you another goat in 5 months, cow takes a little more than 9 months.
