Andhra Pradesh Government on Friday ordered scientific tests on an ayurveda medicine that is being distributed by an ayurveda practitioner in the port town of Krishnapatnam in Nellore district as a “cure” for Covid-19.

The ruling  MLA K Govardhan Reddy, who is actively promoting the ayurveda medicine in the town, which is in his assembly constituency, told The Indian Express that it is a “miracle cure” for Covid-19.

“Several Covid-19 patients who took this ayurveda medicine showed good improvement and were cured. Bonigi Anandaiah is a renowned Ayurveda practitioner and he has found five medicinal combinations to cure Covid-19. His medicine is working… that is why there are so many people outside his house in Krishnapatnam,” said Reddy.

When asked about the large crowds outside that are not following Covid protocols, he said the security personnel posted are doing their best to ensure people maintain social-distancing. However, as several health department officials and former IAS officers, including former health secretary P V Ramesh, red-flagged the large gatherings as “a recipe for Covid disaster”, the AP government jumped into action.

“Our MLA K Govardhan Reddy has been told not to promote or advertise this so-called miracle cure till the medical experts submit their reports. The CM is angry and upset over this,” an official said.

“The government has decided to send the ayurvedic medicine, which is rumoured to be a miracle cure for Covid-19, to the ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research) for a detailed study of its efficacy. The government has also decided to send a team of medical experts including Ayurveda doctors to Nellore to examine the formulation of the medicine,’’ the official added.

On social media, the purported miracle cure for Covid-19, known as Krishnapatnam medicine or Krishnapatnam tonic, is viral prompting hundreds of people to queue up outside Anandaiah’s house.

Alarmed over a large gathering, and alerted by social media, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, who hails from Nellore district, asked Union Minister for Ayush Kiren Rijiju and ICMR Director Balram Bhargava to conduct a study on the medicine, and submit a report.

An ICMR team has already reached Nellore to conduct the investigation alongside an AP team. Nellore District SP has rushed a contingent of policemen to control crowds in case they turn up over the weekend.

Chinese medicine and Ayurveda has lots of similarities , they both are not same but have similarities

CASE 1

Female, 38 years old, resident of Wuhan, presented with fever, rigors, dry cough and dry mouth without sputum, dizziness, aching limbs, depressive mood, and anorexia. She had been self-medicating (drug unknown) for 3 days before presentation but had felt no improvement. Chest computed tomography (CT) scan showed multiple ground glas' appearance in both lungs. She was diagnosed with pneumonia and admitted to hospital. During her stay on a general medical ward, she was prescribed the antibiotic ceftazidime and a patent Chinese herb infusion (Xiyan Ping—Lipid Sulfonation of Herba Andrographitis/Chuanxinlian) for 4 days but showed no significant improvement. A reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) diagnosis of coronavirus-infected pneumonia was subsequently made.

The patient was then transferred to our department with a fever of 39.2°C, slight aversion to cold, bitter taste and dry mouth, dry cough without sputum, dizziness, aching limbs, and anorexia. She had a red tongue with a thin-yellow–greasy coating. Chest CT is displayed in Figure 1.

FIG. 1.

FIG. 1. Patient 1, chest CT 1: the typical flaky, ground-glass appearance of NCIP can be seen in both lungs. CT, computed tomography; NCIP, novel coronavirus-infected pneumonia.

After admission, in addition to ceftazidime and Xiyan Ping, she was given an herbal formula targeted to her aforementioned symptoms.

TCM diagnosis: Combined pattern of larger yang meridian and lesser yang meridian.

Herbal prescription: Modified Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) and Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang (Ephedra, Apricot Kernel, Gypsum, and Licorice Decoction)

Prescription

Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 20 g

Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) 12 g

Fa Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma preparatum) 12 g

Dang Shen (Codonopsis Radix) 15 g

Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) 10 g

Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) 12 g

Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix preparata) 10 g

Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba) 10 g

Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen) 12 g

Shi Gao (Gypsum fibrosum) 30 g

Lu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma) 30 g

Zi Wan (Asteris Radix) 15 g

Kuan Dong Hua (Farfarae Flos) (Flos Farfarae) 15 g

Chan Tui (Cicadae Periostracum) 10 g

Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen) 20 g

Mai Ya (Hordei Fructus germinatus) 20 g

The aforementioned herbal mixture was decocted and taken orally twice daily.

After 1 dose of the herbs the patient's sweating and temperature decreased; she reported resolution of most of her symptoms after 3 doses and her RT-PCR test became negative. Her temperature changes are displayed in Figures 2 and 3.

FIG. 2.

FIG. 2. Patient 1, temperature chart 1.

FIG. 3.

FIG. 3. Patient 1, temperature chart 2.

The TCM prescription was not altered any further as the patient improved. After completing her course, 7 days of herbs, repeat RT-PCR testing was negative for COVID-19. A repeat CT scan showed reduction but not complete disappearance of the typical ground glass appearance, and so herbs were continued for a further 5 days. The patient improved daily without recurrence of symptoms (Fig. 4).

FIG. 4. Patient 1, chest CT 2.

Result

A third CT scan showed almost complete disappearance of the ground glass appearance (Fig. 5). On discharge the patient had complete resolution of symptoms.
