Ganguly took over India's captaincy after the match-fixing fiasco in 2000 and has nurtured one too many youngsters during his captaincy. Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, Ashish Nehra, Mohammed Kaif made their respective debuts under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly.

Ganguly asked Virender Sehwag to open the innings In Test and changed the career of Delhi's batsman, who went on to made two triple centuries in the longest format of the game.

Ganguly made some brave decisions during his tenure in the captaincy. For example, when India was struggling to find a wicketkeeper-batsman, he asked his deputy Rahul Dravid to wear the gloves and it helped him to play an extra batsman in the playing XI.

Under his leadership, India went on to beat Australia in Test series in 2001, beat England at Lord's to win 2002 Natwest Trophy, reached 2003 World Cup final, drew against England in Test series in 2004, and even defeated Pakistan in a Test series in 2005.

King of nicknames

'Dada,' 'Prince of Kolkata,' 'God of the off-side,' 'King of comebacks,' 'Maharaj,' Royal Bengal Tiger,' former Indian captain has been given multiple nicknames by cricket fans, experts, and teammates in his cricketing career.

Geoffrey Boycott once called him 'The Prince of Calcutta.' His parents nicknamed him 'Maharaj.' Some labeled him the 'Royal Bengal tiger' for his temper, while some argued him to be the best Indian Cricket team captain ever. And most lovingly, he is known as 'Dada.'

Making Steve Waugh wait for the toss or the shirtless celebration in the Lord's balcony, everything the Prince of Kolkata has done is iconic and cherished to date. Ganguly's fall out with former Indian coach Greg Chappell is also well known.

King of Lord's

Sourav Ganguly made his international debut against West Indies in 1992 in an ODI. But he was later dropped from the Indian team, citing attitude problem.

However, he set domestic cricket on fire and made a comeback in 1996. Ganguly had a dream debut at the Lord's, where he scored a century on his Test debut, and after that, he never looked back.

Ganguly is India's third-highest run-scorer in the ODIs, with a tally of 11,163 runs, including 22 centuries and 72 half-centuries.

Apart from featuring in 311 ODIs, Ganguly played 113 Tests, scoring 7212 runs with 16 centuries and 35 fifties. He never played an international T20 match but lead Kolkata Knight Riders and Pune Warriors in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ganguly, the administrator

After retiring from the game in 2008, Ganguly chose to give back to the game that made him one of the legend of world cricket.

Having served as the Cricket Association of Bengal president, on October 23, 2019, Ganguly formally took over as the 39th BCCI President without facing any opposition to his candidacy. Hailed all over the country as a players-man and the best possible person for the job, Ganguly has had an eventful tenure as BCCI president, mostly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
