It was ganguly and dravid as captains that faced the toughest australian teams. Ricky Ponting, especially was reduced to a shadow of his former self by the time Dhoni became captain. Michael Clarke was brilliant, but only for an year and a half. Everyone from warne, mcgrath, gillespie had retired by the time dhoni was captain. KL Rahul is in the team only because he plays the other formats too. Purely based on his test record, his place should be in question. KL just came back from around last england tour before that place of his was question mark in test team so no point in giving him captaincy now.. His record in 2018 & 2019 was awful and didn't play any tests in 2020, made a come back to team in 2021 due to various reasons dip of shaw , gill injury/form dip. He is just settling in to XI.
