moplah was an agrarian revolt against the landowners, with anti-imperialist undertones, given most of the landowners were also officers of the british raj. since majority of the revolutionaries were muslim, its being painted as purely anti-Hindu. It was not.

similar rebellion happened even before the 1857 in jharkhand, where Santhals (tribals) weaponized the Hindu religion and led a revolution against the East India company, and upper castes who were moneylenders that controlled the region through their tax system.

what these incidents did was see marked increase in communalization of the region. malabar saw a remarkable rise in number of mosques after this rebellion, and so did jharkhand see a rise in people who identified as Hindu.
