Brahmins of Maharashtra were opposed to anoint Shivaji. According to the system of Chaturvarna, Shivaji was Shudra and not from Kshatriyas or Brahmins. Even after winning and establishing the large kingdom, Shivaji was not considered eligible for the being a king by Brahmins. Not only Brahmins but Kshatriyas also didn’t want to accept Shivaji as a king.
