Srilanka is a multi-religious, multi-ehnic society with around 75% Buddhist Sinhalese, 14 % Hindu Tamils, 9% Mulsims and 7% Christians: with a constitution originally promising secularism and equal representation of all ethnic groups.

Sometime in 80s, Buddhist majority society was bitten by a keedaa to throw their weight around. So they amended their constitution to make Sinhalese an official language and Buddhism a 'PREFERED' state religion pushing the rest of the minorities to the status of 'second class' citizens.

Then they pushed even further and made college and university education open to only Buddhist Sinhalese, derecognizing Tamil as a language and culture of Sri Lanka. This led to rise of LTTE culminating into civil war that lasted for decades before LTTE was finally decimated with all sort of war crimes committed on Tamils. Once Tamils were tamed, next were Muslims and Christians.

Inspired by Virathu of Myanmar and other Buddhist extremist movements in the region, SL Buddhist monks started their own Buddhist extremism leading to boycott of Muslim businesses, Halal products, Hijab ban and other such hate provoking issues leading to many riots which affected tourism industry in a big way pushing many Lankans out of jobs and leaving economy in a bad shape.

As if that was not enough, Buddhists majoritarian hooligans and Monks started forcing Christians to shut their churches in villages on accusation of converting Buddhists to Christianity.

Meanwhile, Hindu Tamils were rendered too weak after their defeat in civil war, to even defend their temples in Jafna. These were demolished on orders of Monks and Buddhist temples built over them to humiliate and dehumanise SL Tamils as having lineage of Chola dynasty that had once upon a time committed genocide of Buddhists in Sri Lanka. Sounds familiar!! Ummmm!

Politics of hate and divisiveness have a shelf life. The after effects, though, are long lasting and terrible."
