President Biden on Wednesday invoked the Defense Production Act to address a nationwide shortage in baby formula, an attempt to ramp up domestic production rapidly as parents are scrambling and store shelves are running bare.

The White House said the move will require suppliers to redirect critical resources to formula manufacturers before any other customers or uses, adding it would simultaneously launch an operation to ensure faster flights of imports by using Defense Department air cargo contacts.
