A lot of times they buy for existing customer base and keep competition away, skype customers were upgraded to teams and google at that time were considering to buy Skype. Skype had a huge enterprise/business customer base at the time of acquisition 

similarly they bought github, their azure Do has some neat features, there will be a fusion of features between git and az-do, they got git customer base which is why they paid big bucks

Yep, also Facebook buying WhatsApp in 2014 for 19B to gain instantly from WhatsApp’s user base when WhatsApp had over 500 million MAUs, and the service added more than 1 million users per day. WhatsApp users sent 500 million pictures back and forth per day, about 150 million more than Facebook users.
