I see it's been a while since you’ve posted, but I just wanted to ask—has anyone here recently tried bidding for business class upgrades through airline apps or third-party services? Wondering if those actually work or if they’re just a waste of time and points. Also curious if anyone scored a solid deal last-minute at the check-in counter.

I've had some luck asking nicely at the gate for upgrades, especially if I'm dressed decent and the flight isn’t full. Also racked up points with daily spend to use later.

I almost always get upgraded to business class on American because I have Platinum status. In some cases they put me in the front (not business) if no seats are available.
