NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday alleged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of making a false claim about the rise in poverty in the country and urged the Election Commission to take “strict action” against him.

Lodging a complaint with the poll panel, the saffron party has also accused Gandhi of continuing to create a North-South divide in the country on the basis of language and region to vitiate the poll atmosphere.

A delegation from the BJP, including national general secretary Tarun Chugh and party's national media department in-charge Anil Baluni, approached the EC to register their grievances against Gandhi's purported actions. Addressing reporters following the complaint, Chugh lambasted Gandhi for allegedly spreading falsehoods about poverty levels in the country, citing a purported lack of evidence to support his claims.
