PITTSBURGH —

UPMC announced more 1,000 layoffs throughout the Pittsburgh-based health system on Wednesday morning.

UPMC declined to answer specific questions about the employees affected. Its written statement appears to suggest the count is in excess of 1,000 employees.

 

"These actions impact a little more than 1% of the staff members throughout UPMC's 100,000+ workforce across its businesses system wide," wrote Paul Wood, UPMC vice president and chief communications officer.

"The entire health industry continues to face the realities of a still-evolving post pandemic marketplace," Wood wrote. "To ensure that UPMC continues to thrive...limited reductions are occurring throughout the health system."

He wrote that "Enhanced severance pay and benefits coverage is being provided."
