Drdo Hands Over Six Daksh Rovs To Army

[color=#3F3F3F][font=Georgia,]After nine years of development, DRDO’s much talked about robot, Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Daksh was handed over to the Indian Army on Monday.[/font][/color]


[color=#3F3F3F]The flagging off ceremony of six of the Limited Series Production (LSP) models took place at the Research and Development Engineers (R&DE), the laboratory, along with private partners has developed the robot starting May 2002. The robot, which can handle, scan and defuse Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) will add to the Indian Army’s existing fleet of 45 such imported Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV). Besides the LSP order of 20 which would be delivered soon, over 100 ROVs are required by the Army in future.[/color]

[color=#3F3F3F]“Induction of ROV Daksh into the field Army is a step forward as far as fighting terrorism or non- state actors is concerned. IEDs are used by the non-state actors as they are low cost option and reap maximum dividends. A self contained unit, ROV Daksh can be deployed along the western/ eastern borders for road opening parties and other such operations,” said Maj Gen Rakesh Bassi, director general (Combat Engineers) who accepted the equipment on behalf of the Indian Army.[/color]


[color=#3F3F3F]An outcome of the Army’s review of its counter IED Policy in the ’90s, the Daksh is a 100 per cent indigenous robot with contribution from Indian SMEs, notable amongst them being Dynalog. The field trials of the equipment were conducted in 2007 and the Army had reverted back with a few suggestions relating to battery life, carrier vehicle, cameras on front as well as back side besides others- which have been incorporated in the final product.[/color]

[color=#3F3F3F]Future versions of ROV Daksh would include night vision devices, increased battery life and the capabilities to recce/ survey Nuclear Biological chemical (NBC) contaminated area.[/color]

[color=#3F3F3F]As reported by The Indian Express, a gun mounted version of the robot has also been under development at the R&DE laboratory in Pune.[/color]

[color=#3F3F3F]Speaking on the occasion, S Sundaresh, chief controller, R&D, DRDO said, “Innovation is the key to future. With the success of this project, we are also looking at NSG, paramilitary forces, CRPF as the other clients besides the Indian Army.” S Guruprasad, director, R&DE, was also present.[/color]
