Normal life in Chennai and other coastal areas in Tamil Nadu came to a halt on Wednesday afternoon following mild tremors recorded in the city. The tremors were the fall out of a massive earthquake near Sumatra in Indonesia.
People came out en mass from high rise buildings in Chennai and suburbs.The director general of police asked thepublic not to venture out to the beach till the ITEWC withdraws the red alert. The Madras Port was closed down following the warning.
Indian scientists came to the rescue of almost all countries lying in the Indian Ocean Rim with a sharp and advance forecasting of a possible tsunami attack on Wednesday. Scientists of the Hyderabad based Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre led by Dr Srinivas Kumar instantly picked up signals emanating from the bottom of the Indian Ocean and they zeroed in on an earthquake of magnitude 8.6 in the Richter Scale near Sumatra in Indonesia at 2.08 pm. A tsunami alert was issued within six minutes to 28 countries lying in the rim of the Indian Ocean.
“There were minor tsunami waves following the earthquake but they subsided within minutes. We withdrew the alert once we were sure that there was no possibility of any tsunami waves,” Dr Satish Shenoi, director, INCOIS told DNA over telephone.

Scientists at ITEWC, which was set up immediately after the 2004 December tsunami attack, monitor the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal on a round-the-clockbasis and pick up all abnormalities happening in the oceans. “We could identify and infer the earthquake which happened near sumatar in real time. Within minutes we pinpointed the vulnerable areas like Car Nicobarand Indira Pointand hence we issued a tsunami warning to the local disaster management authorities. States like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and rest of Andaman islands were asked to issue a warning to the people to keep off the beaches as there was a possibility ofwaves hitting thesecoasts,” said a scientist in the ITEWC. The tsunami warning was called off within hours following green signal issued by ITEWC.
