Why do we Perform Behavioural Based Interviews?

The premise of behavioural based interviewing is that past behaviour is the best indicator of future behaviour; therefore if you were able to demonstrate the performance skill successfully in the past, you will likely be able to demonstrate it again in the future.

What are Performance Skills?

Performance skills are skills that are acquired throughout the course of one's life, such as leadership, decision making, and teamwork.  These differ from technical skills as technical skills can be learned in a relatively short period of time. For example, you could take a course on Microsoft Excel and become reasonably proficient with that program. We have a great deal of confidence that we will be able to teach the majority of the required technical skills, therefore the focus of the interview is on the performance skills you possess.

What Should I Expect in my Behavioural Based Interview with XXX?

XXX conducts panel interviews, so expect to interview with two to three people. The interviewers will provide you with an introduction to the Behavioural Based Interview process, and give you an opportunity to ask questions about it.

Experts in the field (someone who has actually done the job) have assessed which performance skills are critical to your success in the position, and chosen questions that will determine the presence of this skill. They will expect detailed and specific examples in your answers, and may ask you to elaborate if they require more information make a proper assessment. When answering the questions tell the interviewer about events that actually happened. Do not use hypothetical (what you would do in that situation) or general situations (what you usually do).

In order to remember specific details that you provide in your interview, the interviewers will be taking detailed notes. This results in less eye contact and periods of silence. Do not let this make you uncomfortable, the interviewers are simply trying to get as much information documented as possible.

What Can I do to Prepare for a Behavioural Based Interview?

Although you will not be provided with the interview questions in advance, there are still ways that you can prepare for your interview. Make sure that you review the job description so that you are familiar with the requirements of the position, and what skills you would need to possess in that role. Think of “success stories” that demonstrate your strengths. These may stem from work experiences, out-of-work activities, volunteer work, etc. Feel free to bring a few notes with you to the interview for your reference.

The Interview

It is important to ensure that you understand the interview question so that you are able to provide the best example possible. If you do not understand the question, or what skill they are looking for, ask for clarification, or for the interviewers to re-read the question. We understand that sometimes it is difficult to think to specific examples that actually happened. If you are struggling with one of the questions, ask the interviewers to move on and then come back to it.

Remember to take your time and think about each question, there is no rush, and the interviewer has been trained to welcome silence while you gather your thoughts. In order to ensure that you have answered the question completely, format your answers according to the SHARE model.

The SHARE Model

·        Set the Stage/situation

o   What was happening?

·        Hindrances/obstacles

o   What were the challenges you were faced with?

·        Actions you took

o   What did you, as an individual, do to demonstrate the skill asked about?

·        Results

o   What was the outcome?

·        Evaluation

o   What did you learn?

o   What might you do differently if put in that situation again?

When answering the questions, your focus should be on YOUR actions and how YOU demonstrated the skill.

What is Appropriate to Ask at the Time of the Interview?

Before any performance skill questions are asked the interviewee can ask any questions they may have regarding the interview process.  At the conclusion of the interview, the interviewer(s) will ask if you have any questions.  Questions pertaining to the work environment, team, or culture you may potentially be working in are acceptable.  Try to avoid “me” based questions that focus on what the company has to offer you.

Phone Interviews

When scheduling a phone interview, ensure you provide the representative with the phone number where you would like to be contacted.  If possible, use a landline as opposed to a cell phone to reduce the occurrence of static, loss of signal, or a dead battery.  At the time of your interview, ensure that you are in a quiet environment and not distracted by your surroundings.

Sample Questions

Tell me about a time when you had to use your presentation skills to influence someone’s opinion.

Give me a specific example of a time when you had to conform to a policy with which you did not agree.

Describe a time when you anticipated potential problems and developed preventative measures.
