Will VMR run from M'wada to Gajuwaka?

VISAKHAPATNAM: Though four corridors have been under consideration for the much-touted Vizag Metro Rail project (VMR), it is eventually the 35-km-long stretch from Madhurawada to Gajuwaka along the National Highway-16 (Chennai-Howrah via Vizag) within the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) limits that may steal a march over the others.

According to sources, though four months ago GVMC had proposed four corridors, namely Maddilapalem to NAD Junction (12 km), City Railway Station to Gajuwaka via Scindia (15 km), Tagarapuvalasa to Hanumanthawaka (20km) and NAD Junction to Gajuwaka (10 km), the civic body is now rooting for the Madhurawada-Gajuwaka stretch because of the rapid march of the city towards Madhurawada along the national highway as well as the Bay of Bengal coast.

Sources pointed out that the emergence of Madhurawada as the Port City's IT district, which has led to a boost in realty there, along with the fact that it also houses industries, educational institutions and tourism projects, make it ideal for development of VMR with the industrial hub of Gajuwaka at the other end.

This speculation has been gaining currency even as a special team from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and 'metro man' E Sreedharan, who has been appointed chief advisor for the VMR by AP, lands in the city on October 15 and 16 on his maiden visit to review the VMR project and pick the most viable route.

And even as the GVMC is betting on the Madhurawada-Gajuwaka stretch, city-based industrialists, stake holders and concerned citizens headed by state minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao are gearing up to hold a review meeting of their own to suggest a VMR route map to the Sreedharan-led team.

Confirming the meeting, Ganta said, "The route should be viable for the metro rail project for another 100 to 150 years. Though the authorities are restricting the length of the project only up to 25 kms, we will try to push for the route length to be increased to cover areas like Bheemili and Anakapalle because of the vast potential for future development the two areas hold."
