विसाखपटनम Visakhapatnam (VSKP): The facility is being set up by Container Corporation of India Limited. In the first phase, facilities have been developed on a 10-acre site and provision of railway infrastructure with five full-length lines for handling inward and outward rakes will be developed in two years.

The first Multi Modal Logistics Park (Phase-1) in Andhra Pradesh, established by the Container Corporation of India Limited (CONCOR), was inaugurated by Waltair Divisional Railway Manager Anil Kumar at Viman Nagar, opposite Visakhapatnam International Airport, here on Friday.

Deputy Chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Trust G.V.L. Satya Kumar, Director (International Marketing and Operations) of CONCOR Yash Vardhan, Executive Director, CONCOR, V. Kalyana Rama Rao, Joint Commissioner of Customs M.S. Reddy, and CONCOR Senior General Manager G.R. Seshagiri Rao participated in the inaugural.

The container handling and storage facilities, being provided on 4 lakh sq. ft., besides a 50,000 sq. ft. temperature-controlled warehouse, would give a fillip to export and import trade as also domestic trade. It would provide seamless connectivity for transport of cargo to the hinterland.

In the first phase, facilities have been developed on a 10-acre site and additional facilities, including provision of railway infrastructure with five full-length lines for handling inward and outward rakes, would be developed in two years in an extent of 100 acres at an estimated cost of Rs.370 crore.

Describing the setting up of the MMLP as a “big day in the history of Visakhapatnam and the VPT,” Mr. Satya Kumar said though the VPT was identified as a hub port for container traffic four years ago, it had not happened so far due to lack of logistics infrastructure. He said the port had achieved 23.6 per cent growth in container traffic last year and the existing container terminal capacity was reaching its saturation point.

Mr. Anil Kumar expressed the view that the MMLP would help the Railways in regaining the freight traffic share it had lost to road transport over the years. The doubling of R-V line beyond Rayagada was progressing and doubling and electrification works were also being undertaken.

Mr. Yash Vardhan said this was the first MMLP in Andhra Pradesh and the greatest advantage was it was situated close to the airport and the seaport.

Another MMLP would be set up near Hyderabad and the target was to set up 15 MMLPs in the country.

Business buzz brings hope to realty sector in Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM: At a time when bifurcation and poll results are just around the corner, enquiries for availability of land for setting up of business ventures seem to have taken off in the city. Realty sources said that several MNCs and even Indian firms from various parts of the country have started engaging consultancies for evaluating the potential of doing business in Vizag.

"Many companies are enquiring about availability of land and conducting private surveys. People who didn't know much about Vizag are also calling up and collecting information," said a city-based realtor.

According to sources, private consultancy agencies are being hired by multinational companies to conduct surveys and collate general information about Vizag. "Some have come and checked out the available land pockets here. Though they are not revealing the names of the company they represent, they are collecting information on land rates in commercial areas and distance from the airport," the realtor added.

A marketing manager of a construction company said, "It's not just about lands, people from different sectors are also being approached to know what kind of investments exist in the city and if any other major players are expected to venture in the near future. Once any concrete proof of investments gets around, then they will be in a position to take up projects swiftly without wasting much time."

Furthermore, another real-estate consultant said, "It's all about purchasing land at the correct price. If they venture in too early and there is no development, then they will be losing out, but if they come into the market too late, then the prices would have gone up leading to lower bottomlines. So if they identify land and have a sense of the prices, they can always go for the kill once the political climate settles down in the state."

"The curiosity is more because Vizag is the biggest city in AP after division. With the city being touted as the commercial capital, the enquiries are likely to increase," he added.

Confirming the interest expressed by various firms, an industries department official said, "Even though the investments expected in Vizag are at a premature stage now, because we have to wait and watch what kind of policy the new government comes up with, there is a positive mood now in favour of Seemandhra and especially Vizag. A lot of investors, who have set up their industries in the Telangana region, are flocking here to glean information about the Seemandhra landscape."

"They (companies) want a presence in both states (Telangana and residuary AP). With talk of special status for Seemandhra and buzz around the Vizag-Chennai industrial corridor, firms are enquiring about land and other basic infrastructure. They are stepping up physical visits to areas having large tracts of land," he explained.
