GVMC pins hopes on special status

 

The CDP has a shelf of projects costing Rs. 6,000 crore

With the State Government not in a position to foot 20 per cent of the cost of any project in municipal corporations and its own finances precarious, GVMC pins its hopes on the special status the new State will get after bifurcation.

While the assurances given in the process of division include Metro rail project with a cost of Rs. 5,000 crore, there are other equally important projects.

The City Development Plan (CDP) got prepared by GVMC has a shelf of projects costing Rs. 6,000 crore.

They include the laying of pipeline from Yeleru canal costing Rs.1,900 crore and from Raiwada (Rs. 350 crore), four flyovers, completely regulating storm water drains and total underground drainage for the city.

Bheemunipatnam and Anakapalle account for projects worth another Rs.2,000 crore.

“Unless the water storage and supply situation is improved, it is extremely difficult to meet the needs of the growing population and that of industry,” says Municipal Commissioner M.V. Satyanarayana.

The special status to be accorded on the lines of the North Eastern States will make the residuary State eligible for 90 per cent grant.

If it materialises, it will also free the GVMC, the largest in the soon-to-be-constituted new state, from the burden of contributing 30 per cent of the project cost.

Under JNNURM, GVMC took up projects worth nearly Rs.1,900 crore and borrowed heavily to foot its share.

Of the remaining 50 per cent is borne by the Centre and the remaining by the State Government.
