VISAKHAPATNAM, MAY 30:

The revenue of Visakhapatnam airport has gone up by ₹2.96 crore during 2013-14, notwithstanding agitations in the State and the consequent drop in the number of passengers.

The total revenue (both traffic and non-traffic), estimated at ₹33.15 crore this year, is the highest during the past five years and represents growth of ₹20.96 crore this year compared to 2009-10. This is despite the drop in aircraft movements from 15,491 in 2012-13 to 11,266 in 2013-14.

Assistant General Manager (Finance) G. Madhusudhana Rao attributed the growth in revenue despite the reduction in aircraft movements to the introduction of large-bodied aircraft such as Boeings in place of ATRs, which are about half the size of bigger aircraft.

The traffic revenue, which was ₹23.75 crore in 2012-13, increased to ₹25.28 crore during the next year, registering a growth of ₹1.53 crore and the non-traffic revenue (commercial) increased from ₹6.44 crore to ₹7.87 crore during the same period, registering an increase of ₹1.43 crore. Similarly, the total revenue increased from ₹30.19 crore to ₹33.15 crore during the same period.

The total number of passengers, both domestic and international, registered a marginal decrease from 10,38,958 in 2012-13 to 10,13,689 during 2013-14. The two-month agitation against the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh had an impact on the movement of passengers.

The industry, air travellers and exporters are optimistic on the prospects of airport and expect an impetus to the growth of traffic and introduction of more domestic and international flights in view of the appointment of Vizianagaram MP Ashok Gajapathi Raju as Union Minister for Civil Aviation.

A delegation from Bandung, Indonesia, visited the city to explore its tourism potential. The delegates, belonging to the Bandung Cultural Department and Bandung Tourism Promotion Board, visited tourist spots in and around the city. They were very impressed with the city and promised to promote it in Bandung. To facilitate mutual cooperation, Bandung Tourism signed an MoU with Tours and Travels Association Andhra Pradesh.

Visakhapatnam is connected well to Bandung via Singapore and the officials said that it would take only six hours to reach as there was a direct flight to Singapore operated by Silk Air.

Cultural show

The visitors organised a cultural show in the evening at Four Points Hotel and showcased some of their traditional dances. The performances were colourful and full of energy and provided a glimpse into their rich heritage. A presentation was also made about the places to visit in and around Bandung and also various shopping attractions.
