Umesh Chandra was assassinated on September 4, 1999 when he stopped at a traffic light. Four naxalites opened fire on him, his driver and his gunman. His driver and gunman were killed immediately as they were shot at point blank range.

Incidentally, on that particular day he did not carry his weapon (handgun). However, his love for his men was so overpowering that he did not think for his safety even for a second. While chasing a couple of the naxalites, the naxalites sensed that he did not carry a weapon and turned back and fired at him twice. Umesh Chandra then collapsed on the road, at which point they shot him point blank.

Everyone in the entire state, irrespective of age, shed tears over this ghastly event. Hundreds of thousands of people from the other districts of the state converged to Hyderabad to pay their respects to a daring, brave warrior who refused to compromise on his principles.

Every police officer who worked with Umesh Chandra allegedly questioned their superiors why Umesh Chandra was not provided with adequate police protection. Many policemen expressed anger at the top police brass. Even the common man was disgusted with the attitude of the police brass.

The top police officials only made lame excuses at the event. In fact, they were the main reason why security was not accorded to Umesh Chandra. Even though they knew that Umesh Chandra was more successful in dealing with naxalites than all of them combined, and therefore was a prime target, they refused to provide Umesh Chandra with the necessary security force warranted any one with Umesh Chandra's record on the naxal front.

This event naturally created a good deal of sympathy for Umesh Chandra. A number of police officers and constables who worked with Umesh Chandra wanted to come and pay respects to Umesh Chandra. Even in this situation, the top police brass were jealous of Umesh Chandra. They issued a directive that these police officials must not travel to Hyderabad to pay respects to their leader. In spite of such directives, hundreds of policemen attended the funeral and risked facing the wrath of their officers.

The aftermath:

To honour their association with Umesh Chandra, several police divisions and peoples associations started a number of activities such as

• sports meets

• cricket matches

• poor feeding

• water camps during the summer

• supplying snacks to patients in hospitals by voluntary service associations

Several songs were composed in his honour.

People have started adorning their walls with Umesh Chandra's photographs. When one visits any home in the Cuddapah district, one will find a garlanded photograph of Umesh Chandra. The same holds to for every police station in the entire state of Andhra Pradesh. It is no wonder he became immortal, in the minds of people and the police force.

The chief of Anti terrorist squad of Mumbai Police in 2008 when Country's economic capital was under siege. He laid his life fighting with the terrorists who entered the country in view of mass killing. Except this part he was very efficient as a police officer. He led the investigation team which investigated the Malegaon Bombings, solved serial bombing cases of Thane, Vashi and panvel. He was awarded the Highest Peace time Gallantry Award of The Country "Ashok Chakra" Posthumously.

Karkare came from a Maharashtrian family. Karkare obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur in 1975. After graduation he worked for National productivity council, Government of India and then Hindustan Lever Limited now Hindustan Unilever Ltd., India's largest FMCG company.
He joined the Indian Police Service (IPS) as a member of the 1982 batch. Before becoming ATS Chief of Maharashtra State in January 2008, he was Joint Commissioner of Police (Administration) of Mumbai Police.[7] He served seven years in Austria in the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India's external intelligence agency. According to former senior Mumbai Police officer Y.C. Pawar, Mr. Karkare was regarded as very influential officer in police circles.(Times of India Nov.28 2008).

At 9.45 p.m. while having his dinner at his Dadar residence, he received a call about a terrorist attack at C.S.T. station. He switched on the TV for news and left at once with his driver and bodyguards for C.S.T. There he donned a bullet-proof vest and helmet (shown on news channels live), and went to Platform No.1, but found it deserted. He was then informed that the terrorists had moved to the Cama and Albless Hospital ("Cama") next to the Azad Maidan police station.
The operation was difficult as it was dark and the terrorists were well prepared and virtually on a fidayeen mission. The officers, with a few constables, went into Cama from the back and Kamte fired at the terrorist. A couple of constables were left stationed at the back entrance of Cama, while the rest boarded a Qualis jeep. Salaskar asked the driver to let him take over at the wheel. About that time, they heard on the wireless that the terrorists were hiding behind a red car.
As they turned from the Crime Branch office towards Rang Bhavan looking for the red car, near the Corporation Bank ATM, they saw a terrorist running. Kamte or Salaskar - or both - fired, the bullet hitting the terrorist on his arm, his AK-47 fell down. He was Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive later. As they were thinking of getting down, a second terrorist, Ismail Khan appeared and fired a volley of bullets at them. All but one Assistant Police Inspector Jadhav died.
Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte, Salaskar and others died in fighting the Mumbai attacks, on 27 November 2008 in a narrow lane between St. Xavier's College and Rang Bhavan, just a stone throw away from the Crime Branch office.

Here again they fired several times. While attempting to leave the area, one of the tires of the vehicle burst, so the terrorists departed to obtain another. At this point, Jadhav was able to contact headquarters. The bodies of the dead were recovered and taken to St George Hospital.
In an investigation, Headline Today, an Indian news agency, found that a substandard bulletproof jacket had been issued to Mr. Karkare. Though, according to the post mortem report, the quality of the vest was not a factor in his death concerns in the media about the quality of the vest continue because the vest itself was, according to Indian authorities, misplaced in the hospital.

Kamte was an excellent negotiator in crisis situations, a quality for which he was summoned late night on 26 November 2008 to deal with Pakistani terrorists holed up in Mumbai buildings. During his police career, Kamte had earned a substantial following of ordinary citizens[3] as he took on hardened criminals and politicians with criminal backgrounds. Shortly after taking over the Sangli police department, the notorious criminal Raju Pujari was killed in a police encounter.
Kamte came into media limelight after an August 2007 incident in Solapur when he arrested Ravikant Patil, a three-time Member of the Legislative Assembly from Indi in neighboring Karnataka. Patil and his supporters were celebrating at the residence of Patil's brother Ratikant a Shiv Sena leader. They scuffled when police tried to enforce the law against bursting of crackers late in the night. Kamte sustained hand injuries in the process of arresting Patil. Patil suffered multiple wounds.[4] The incident created an uproar in political circles but the people of Solapur supported Kamte. Kamte told the Times of India: "Law is equal for all and nobody has the right to violate it".
During Mumbai's occasional communal violence between Hindus and Muslims, the areas under his supervision remained largely free of riots. He was known to be a secular officer and equally loved and respected by both communities.
"He was a daredevil officer who had gained popularity matching [that of] a Bollywood hero. He himself was on the roads maintaining peace after the Khairlanji massacre. While other cities in the state witnessed violence, Solapur remained calm", said Anand Salunkhe, former member of Solapur Municipal Transport.
Nearly 3000 people turned up to pay their respects to Additional Commissioner of Police Ashok Kamte who was cremated in Pune with full state honours. Kamte was one of the most respected and admired officers of the Mumbai Police force. News of his death sent shock waves not just across Maharashtra but across South India, where he had served in Belgaum for a period.
He was specially summoned on Wednesday night to deal with the terrorists who had laid siege to Mumbai. Kamte was part of the 1989 batch of the IPS of the Maharashtra cadre.[5]
Kamte was shot along with Vijay Salaskar,Hemant Karkare and constables in a narrow lane between St. Xaviers College and Rang Bhavan by the terrorists.
"A cop that turned Solapur from a wrong city to the right one. The person who every responsible Solapurkar liked and loved. This community has been created to pay the respect and gratitude that he deserves," Survived by his wife and two children, Kamte is remembered by his friends at the IPS Academy as well as journalists that interacted with him as one of the bravest officers, ready to face any challenge in the line of duty".[5]
Kamte was one of the 14 men from the police force who lost their lives in Mumbai's latest and biggest fight against terror.
Ashok Kamte was killed in action by terrorists during the Mumbai attacks, on 26 November 2008 in a narrow lane between St. Xavier's College and the Rang Bhavan opposite Corporation Bank ATM just a stone away from Crime Branch office.
Mr. Kamte was well known for his cool temperament and negotiation skills; during the attacks he offered his assistance due to being Additional Commissioner of the East zone; an area not under attack. When he reached CST area, upon arriving at Azad Maidan Police Station (AMPS) he met with ATS Chief Hemant Karkare and other police officers; they took a Police Toyota Qualis in pursuit of the reported terrorists with Kamte armed with an AK47. When they reached rear entrance of the Cama and Albless Hospital (A women and children's hospital) which is next to AMPS, Kamte spotted and fired at terrorists with the terrorists retaliating by throwing hand grenades; with the this situation Kamte suggested that they should take on the terrorists from the front entrance of the Cama. At this point the terrorists had left the Cama area before the Kamte's plan could be implemented; during pursuit the police received a report that the terrorists were hiding behind a red car in the same lane. At around the same time a terrorist was spotted running from the area which Kamte fired at, injuring him. The terrorist Ajmal Kasab was the only terrorist to be captured alive during the attacks. As they were about to get down another Pakistani terrorist, Ibrahim Khan fired a volley of bullets killing all but Asst. Police Inspector Arun Jadhav. Kamte was hit in the head; although he was wearing helmet with no ballistic vest. (Times of India 19 December 2008)

Around 3,000 people were present.

Shri Ashok Marutrao Kamte, Addl. Commissioner of Police was part of the police team which rushed to Cama Hospital where the terrorists had moved in. A firefight ensued between the terrorist and the police team. As a result, the terrorists were forced to change their position. The Police team pursued the terrorists but in the process their jeep got ambushed and Shri Kamte was critically injured. He however, continued the fight and played key role in injuring one of the terrorists.

Shri Ashok Marutrao Kamte displayed courage and leadership of the highest order in fighting the terrorists and made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.

Vyas I P S A legendary Police Officer 



Grey hounds founder KS Vyas remembered
It was around 16 years back that the sensational police officer KS Vyas was killed in the LB stadium in Hyderabad. KS Vyas was sensational for several things. It was he who was instrumental in forming the "Grey Hounds", the name which sends jitters down the spine of the Naxalites.

Another incident which made him a star is to reduce the Rowdy menace in Vijayawada in 1980's. Till then no police officer dared to touch the goons belonging to Devineni Nehru and Vangaveeti Ranga. He was the first police officer to arrest the rowdys and in one incident he arrested Vangaveeti Ranga and instead of taking him to the police station by police van, he made Ranga walk the entire two kilometers. This incident was a sensation at that time and instantly made him a hero.

Years ago, it used to be utter chaos with rickshaws parked haphazardly near the Vijayawada railway station and the rickshaw pullers mobbing passengers. After being posted as SP there, Mr. Vyas convened a meeting of the rickshaw puller associations and convinced them to keep rickshaws in a row so that every rickshaw puller would get passengers on first come first serve basis. This ended the pandemonium at the station. With his honesty and uprightness, Mr. Vyas also became a cult figure among youths in the State wanting to join the police force.

His friend Krishna Rao revealed that Vyas not only believed in sincerity and honesty but also in not being arrogant with the public.

Vinod Mehta
A quarter century has passed but Vinod K. Mehta, DC, Port Division, is still remembered in the rank and file of Kolkata Police for the enormous courage that made him face this villains and also for the tragic end to this courage that would have probably won him a place in the pages of history.

It was one black morning on 18.03.1984 at around 11.45 A.M. some miscreants attacked V. K. Mehta, DC, Port Division, his guard, Constable Moktar Ali and others on Ramanajan Lane with bombs / brickbats and other lethal weapons. Mehta with Constable Moktar Ali, close on heels, faced these criminals who were equipped with lethal weapons. Faced with an attack, the duo along with other Policemen took shelter in side a mosque at Ramanajan Zone when the miscreants launched attack at the said mosque and demanded explanation from the Police Force. They were soon overpowered as the criminals took the mosque on seize and started hurling bombs. A Constable was injured. Mehta tried to escape through Battikal towards Garden Reach Road. Mehta took refuge in a house at 228/3, Battikal, but the killers follow him there. Moktar tried to save his superior’s life, but was dragged out and assaulted. His eyes were dug out, his revolver was snatched away and his limbs were chopped off. Moktar bled to death but the killers handn’t had enough with him. They set his body on fire.

By this time Mehta had managed to run off to another house in the neighbourhood at G 222, Battikal, but was soon spotted by the killer gang. They attacked him with sharp weapons and he died instantly. Stripping him of his uniform and shoes, the killers threw Meheta’s body into a canal. The IPS Officer’s body was recovered later from the Kutcha drain near premises No.F59, Attabag.

A specific case was started in connection with this incident and was presented before the Ld.Court of Shri N. K. Bhattacharjee, 9th Court, Additional Session Judge, Alipore.

Honesty does have value!
You might remember IAS officer Ashok Khemka who took action against corruption of Mr. Robert Vadra. You might also remember that Haryana govt replaced him with a succession of IAS officers like Yudhvir Singh, the officers who reversed all the actions taken by Ashok Khemka and restored all licenses to Mr. Vadra. And you might also remember that AAP gave Loksabha ticket tosame Yudhvir Singh as a reward for saving Vadra. 

However, acknowledging the honesty & hard work of Mr. Khemka, Modi Sarkar has recommended his appointment at the Centre. 
Hope this man gets to continue his good work without any more harrassment from the corrupt politicians like those in the Congress led Haryana govt.
