With the Andhra Pradesh government gearing up to name a new capital between Guntur and Vijayawada, the people of Rayalaseema are preparing to launch a massive movement for a separate state on the day a formal announcement is made.

Noted litterateur Kethu Viswanatha Reddy warned that if chief minister Chandrababu Naidu follows the footsteps of his predecessors in the changed scenario and ignores the demand of the Rayalaseema people, who wants the new capital to be located in their region, a "separate Rayalaseema movement" will be only the option.

New organizations fl oated by students, teachers and other intellectuals have sprang up demanding that the new AP capital be located in Rayalaseema. All these organizations are touring the Rayalaseema towns to call upon people to oppose the location of the capital in an already well-advanced region and ignoring ideal locations in their lands.

A student JAC of Kurnool Rajadhani Sadhan Samiti (KRSS) have scheduled a dharna near the Kurnool collectorate on Wednesday to register their protest against the expert committee appointed by the state government, which they say is hijacking the capital away from Rayalaseema. While lawyers and advocates led by retired Justice B Lakshman Reddy, will soon hold a public meeting in Kadapa district to highlight the injustice being done to the region under the aegis of Rayalaseema Rajadhani Sadhana Samiti (SRSS).

Meanwhile, writers from all Rayalaseema districts led by noted Telugu litterateur Kethu Viswanatha Reddy, who held a meeting in Kadapa town last week, have sent a petition to the state government, demanding the the Sribagh pact be honored under which an agreement was signed between Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra leaders in 1937, spelling out that the new capital will be situated in Rayalaseema.

Several activists have also formed the Rayalaseema Party (RP) in Kurnool district to campaign for the capital to be located in Kurnool, and for other developmental programmes in the region. Protagonists of all these organizations fear location of the capital in coastal Andhra will create an unbridgeable schism between Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra region, which will ultimately stoke the separate Rayalaseema movement.

Speaking to TOI from Kadapa, Kethu Viswanatha Reddy said the present government's approach to the location of the capital is bound to create perennial ill-will between the backward Rayalaseema and advanced coastal region. "A capital should be located where government land is available aplenty. The capital should trigger development in and around the areas. So our demand is that the capital should be located in Rayalaseema as the CM says he is for 'sama nyayam' (equal justice)," said the writer who was also a professor of Telugu in various universities.

He said if the AP government decides on the capital to be situated in the Vijayawada-Guntur region, at least a second capital should come up in Rayalaseema. "After a meeting of all Rayalaseema writers, we have sent our demands to chief minister Naidu last week," he said.

Newly-founded Rayalaseema Party president B Panduranga Reddy is for the location of the capital in Kurnool. Reddy along with other colleagues is planning to tour every town of the region and campaign for the capital and other key demands such as more access to Krishna river water, joboriented industries among others.

Tavva Obula Reddy, historian from Kadapa district, said "location of the capital in the developed coastal region would hurt the sentiment of Rayalaseema and the wound could not be healed with false assurances. An action plan to intensify the movement would be chalked out after the dharna before the Kurnool collectorate on Wednesday, said T Somasekhar of KRSS.
