Best case is renew pp 1st and then apply for h1 extension/ammendment

Yes... In future... wherever you need to show your PP you have to show both and have to carry Both... its a must... you should not lose the old one even it is not valid.

 

Even after getting your new PP the visas on your old Passport are valid... provided they are not expired..

 

Extension & PP renewal are 2 different things... Better is to get your new PP and go for extension...

 

most important when you travel into US at POE you might get a shorter duration on i94 because of PP expiry , eventhough you have  visa expiry beyond your PP expiry.
