You are right. However if you get your security clearance and serve atleast one year with your current MOS and your commander is okay with you switching MOS, you can apply for an officer.

My friend joined via MAVNI last year and got his security clearance in 6 months, he is currently talking to his unit commander about applying for the officers training school since he had his citizenship and security clearance.

He might be working on cyber security etc. So no you aren't limited to being a soldier throughout your contract
