Feeling sorry for your friend. Smoking and drinking are not mandatory habits when you are not feeling good about your life. That's more a person's choice. I drink when I don't feel good but that's just to forget my problems and move on not to the level where it affects health...

My professor said this to me when I got my first job offer and I was excited "love your job not your company". So whereever you do your job you do it because you love it...

May be take your friend on a trip, do some hiking etc...may be all your friend needs is a break and also a social life...
