Not happy with the 40 per cent increase in their basic salary, MLAs and MLCs in Andhra Pradesh demand more to be at par with their counterparts in Telangana. Many of them are silently seething over what they call a "meagre" hike, while at least one legislator could not hide his disgust on the "raw deal".

BJP legislator Penmetsa Vishnu Kumar Raju from Visakhapatnam North went to the extent of arguing that the present salary paid to legislators in Andhra Pradesh makes it difficult for one to be honest. "If one wants to be clean in politics, this salary is not enough. We need to be paid more," he told media in the temple town of Tirupati.

Several legislators in the ruling TDP are also upset over the "unequal" treatment meted out to them vis-a-vis Telangana legislators. While legislators in Telangana get salary of Rs 2.75 lakh, those in AP are paid Rs 1.25 lakh.

Some of them demand that they should be given house sites in the AP capital region while others want special allowance as they do not have accommodation in Vijayawada.
