Have you ever been to the deep web? If so, why, and what did you see?

Yes, going on the deep web was part of my job. Please, if you are a sensitive person, do not read my answer. Some graphic stuff will be described in my answer.

As member of cyber-intel unit in private company I was assigned with various tasks many times. That included weapon, drugs and malware trade. The biggest part of deep web black market belongs to drug trade.

Some resources are widely known (for example, like SilkRoad), while other dark market platforms are known only for limited amount of people and have very strict access policies.

One of the highest conspiracy levels are taken among pedophiles. They have quite big forums, where they exchange pictures, videos and advice. Once I had project to investigate the scale of pedophilia and its market in a specific region. Using social engineering I was able to obtain access to a secret forum with very serious access restrictions. It took me two months before I was able to get it, and I was shocked when I started to research its activity. It was extremely hard for me to go through all that material and read very graphic instructions and descriptions. Just as a note: I have been in the Ukrainian military for more than 7 years, I have seen some disturbing things during revolution (in Ukraine) and yet I was shocked with many things which I have seen there. Just as an example: one guy has posted picture of his daughter with “substance” all over her face. Then he asked for advice: “My daughter is now 8 years old. Before, I was practicing only oral. Can I start practicing vaginal sex or I should wait for couple years?”.

Also, I have seen very sick families, where both mother and father engaged in sexual activities with their own kids and sold that video…

Some people were posting instructions about kidnapping and keeping kids as sex slaves. There were several instructions on how to “dispose” of used “material” (kids).

When I finished this project I asked my supervisor not to assign me with these sorts of projects anymore. I can only imagine how stressful it is for law enforcement officers to work in child related departments.

Weapon trade is quite common on deep web, but not as common as drug or malware trade.

Also, such weapons are very limited in amount: usually, not more than 3–5 samples per purchase. Chance is, that you will find some big arms dealer in deep web. However, sometimes you can find some interesting things. Like this:

You can buy dangerous things which can cause death of hundreds in crowded places:

You can buy blank Passport of Russian Federation and fill it with your information…

You need counterfeit currency? Dollar? Euro? No problem…

Do you want to get some fake driver license in US or Canada? Not a problem

If you know right places you can buy pretty much everything. Citizenship, company for money laundering, guns, explosives, porn material of any sort, guides etc.

Edit. Update 2: A lot of people pointed out that what I am talking about is the Dark Web, not Deep Web. I am aware of that. However, you should also remember that the Dark web is just a part of the Deep web and that it is very unlikely that topic starter asked about “web pages that were not indexed by Search Engine”. Should I write an answer like : “oh yeah, I have seen some website about pillows and it wasn’t indexed?”. Of course not, I am sure that topic starter wanted to hear some stories about the dark web, the most interesting part of the Deep Web, and I gave him what he needed.
