Take a break every hour

Did you know that you can be more productive if you work for a shorter period of time?

Though most people claim to work six to eight hours a day, they are actually productive only for about three to four hours. That is, they need to spend only three to four hours to achieve that day’s target. So, why do they end up working for eight hours every day?

It’s a question that both individuals and corporations need to ask themselves. What do most people who sit at desks do all day? Are they actually working or are they checking their emails or browsing the web or checking posts on social networking websites? They are pretending to work and not actually working.

Instead of checking your inbox every few minutes or every time a pop-up window announces the arrival of a new email, why don’t you shut down your personal email app or sign out of it? Just check it once a day and be done with it. This is exactly what Timothy Ferriss did. That’s how he found the time to write the bestseller, The 4-Hour Work Week.

‘Being busy is a form of laziness’, says Ferriss. Doing things that have no benefits, such as checking your email or continuing to work or trying to when your heart is not in it, or when your mind cannot concentrate, is pointless. It is a form of laziness to avoid doing actual, productive work. To be really productive, you need to know when to stop. Take a break every hour, for just five to 10 minutes or so, and you will notice the difference. You will feel more energised and refreshed, and you will be able to get back to work with renewed enthusiasm and energy.

How do you remind yourself?

Well, since most of us work on a computer, sitting at a desk, it is easy. You just have to set hourly reminders on your computer. You can even set an alarm for every hour on your smartphone or PC.

There are also many apps on your smartphone or tablet which help you do this. Once the alarm goes off, stop doing whatever you are at that moment and go for a walk. Do just that. Get up and go for a walk. Drink a glass of water. Go out on the balcony and get some fresh air. What’s the point of this? It’ll make you more productive and you will stay healthier too.

How is that?

Research says that sitting for too long is not good for you. In fact, they say sitting is the new smoking. Yes, sitting in one position for too long, especially for more than an hour can be very unhealthy. It causes physical and mental inertia. When you take a break every hour, you actually recharge your mental faculties and facilitate blood circulation in your legs and brain. If you think taking a break every hour is a new and revolutionary idea, you are mistaken. In the 1980s, an entrepreneur called Francesco Cirillo developed what became famous as the Pomodoro Technique. He used a kitchen timer, shaped like a tomato, to time his work for 25 minutes, after which he would take a break. The technique not only helped him get more work done, but also produced better results. Pomodoro, Italian for tomato, was the term he used to define each stretch of activity, so named after the tomato-shaped timer that he used.

So, taking a break every hour is not that big a deal. In fact, to develop this habit, you can start with taking breaks every hour and then take more frequent ones, every half an hour, like Cirillo did. When you get back from your break, you will notice the difference in how you feel and how much more work you are able to complete in a shorter period of time. This habit will reward you with increased productivity, and keep you healthier.
