There will be separate bidding for USA, Europe, Middle East, Africa regions and the rest of the world. The period will be for five years.

The BCCI will conduct the bidding in the form of a tender process rather than the procedure of e-auction, something which the Indian board had opposed. The winner in each category will be determined by matching the bids which will be presented. The rights will be awarded to the highest bidder in each category. An interested party or a consortium can even make a bid for all seven categories. For India, television rights will be the most lucrative property.

Vivo are the title sponsors of the IPL, retaining the sponsorship rights for 2018-22 for approximately USD 341 million.

Indian Premier League more expensive than international cricket involving India

Star India pipped 23 other bidders to bag a five-year deal to telecast the Indian Premier League in India.

Indian Premier League's new media rights owners Star India will now pay the Board of the Control for Cricket in India even more than what it currently pays for telecasting an Indian team match in the country.

Star India pipped 23 other bidders to grab the Television rights for a whopping Rs 16,347.50 crore for a period of five years from 2018 to 2022. The bidding process took place in Mumbai on Monday.

For an India match, Star India pays BCCI close to Rs 40 crore. On Monday, Star India bought IPL media rights for a staggering US 2.55 billion or Rs 16,347.50 crore.

In 2008, Sony and the Singapore-based sports marketing agency World Sport Group (WSG) combined to outbid ESPN-STAR Sports network to bag a deal for 10 years. BCCI sold the global broadcast rights to the WSG-Sony combine for $918 million.

However, the relationship between Sony and BCCI turned sour after the Indian cricket board terminated Sony's contract after the first IPL season in 2008. BCCI had claimed that Sony had repeatedly violated the integrity of telecast by prematurely cutting to breaks and inserting commercials during a live match, replays and other on-field action.

The BCCI then signed a fresh broadcast deal with WSG, which was engaged in discussions with ESPN-Star Sports (ESS), NDTV and Sony to telecast the IPL. Sony edged out ESS and NDTV and signed on as the official broadcast partners for the IPL.

The nine-year deal (2009-2017) was signed for Rs 8200 crore which was more than double the earlier deal that was signed in 2008 for 10 years with the same two parties.

The companies that bid for the Television rights in India were: Star India, Amazon Seller Services, Followon Interactive Media, Taj TV India, Sony Pictures Networks, Times Internet, Supersport International, Reliance Jio Digital, Gulf DTH FZ LLC, GroupM Media, beIN, Econet Media, SKY UK, ESPN Digital Media, BTG Legal Services, BT PLC, Twitter, Facebook Inc.

Sony was the only other bidder for the TV rights of the world's richest domestic Twenty20 competition, while digital bidders included Supersport, Facebook, Airtel, and Bamtech.

The franchise-based competition began in 2008 with eight teams with owners including India's richest man Mukesh Ambani and Bollywood actors.

Of the 24 companies that bought the tender document, 14 made bids.

"India, cricket and IPL have changed dramatically since 2008, and this bid is a reflection of that," Star India Chief Executive Uday Shankar told reporters.

That's crazy money. I might sound like one of those 90 year old ex-cricketers, but a part of me is sad that cricket isn't about skill or talent anymore, but instead cricket rewards mediocracy. I truly believe that the distinct lack of quality players in world cricket right now is due to the importance of the IPL.

You don't have to go back far even - take a look at the period just a short while before the IPL and you had:

Aus: Langer, Hayden, Ponting, Gilchrist, Hussey, McGrath, Warne, Lee

SA: Smith, Kallis, AB, Amla, Pollock, Gibbs

Pak: Inzi, MoYo, Younus, Akther

India: Sachin, Viru, Dravid, Laxman, Kumble

Lanka: Sanga, Mahela, Muruli, Vaas

Eng: Strauss, Cook, Pietersen, Bell, Flintoff

NZ: Bond, Vettori, Fleming

Now look what you have left - some remaining oldies from the list above plus newcomers like Root, Kohli, Smith and Kane Williamson. No disrepect to any of these 4, but none are legends of the game, at least not yet and frankly all have played much, much weaker teams than their predecessors. Bowling standards are atrocious and batting standards aren't much better.

Still, if you can bowl a 75mph cutter or score 20 off 10 balls, that makes you the Tendulker of this decade.
