Hales to replace Warner for Sunrisers

Notts Outlaws batsman Alex Hales has been signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad as a replacement for David Warner. The former Australian vice-captain was set to captain the franchise, but resigned and was then banned by the BCCI from playing in the tournament for his part in the ball-tampering scandal that emerged in South Africa this week.

Sunrisers' move for Hales means that his gamble to become a white-ball specialist despite missing out in the IPL auction has paid off - stressing his availability in the event of any replacements being needed. He was bought for his base price of INR 1 crore (USD 154,000) from the available player pool list.

Hales' failure to win a spot in the initial auction caused some surprise in England. He remains the only England player till date to score a T20I century and is also the only England batsman to feature in the top-10 list of the ICC T20I rankings.

Hales, 28, had recently signed a two-year deal to play only white ball cricket for Notts Outlaws, but as is common these days, it included a clause stating his right to sign an IPL deal if offered one.

Notts director of cricket Mick Newell said: "Although Alex missed out in the IPL auction, we knew there was a chance he could be signed up as a replacement, given his excellent record in the T20 Blast last summer and with England."

"Clearly, we would have loved Alex to be around for the whole of our own 50-over campaign, but we still go into that competition with a very strong squad and his absence for a period opens up opportunities for others."

Hales will miss two Royal London One-Day Cup matches, and maybe more if Sunrisers reach the playoff stage in late May. Hales will miss the fixtures against Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford and against Northamptonshire at Welbeck.

He will leave for India as soon as possible. The IPL begins on April 7, while Sunrisers' first match is on April 9 against Rajasthan Royals.

Sunrisers will now be captained by New Zealand's Kane Williamson, another consequence of the ball-tampering fallout.

Hales said: "I'm excited to be given this opportunity. While it's disappointing to miss matches for Outlaws, when I return to England I will be match-hardened and ready to give my all to their cause."

Heinrich Klaasen replaces Smith at Rajasthan Royals

Heinrich Klaasen, the South Africa wicketkeeper batsman, has joined Rajasthan Royals as a replacement for Steven Smith, who was banned from playing IPL 2018 because of his role in the ball-tampering scandal in the Cape Town Test.

Klaasen, 26, made his international debut against India in February and was successful in the limited-overs series. He struck 43 off 27 balls to win the pink-day ODI, the biggest limited-overs fixture in the South African calendar. In T20s, he has a strike-rate of 146 after 44 innings, and was regarded as one of the few South African players able to cope with the wristspin of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. In Centurion, he made 69 off only 30 balls to complete a chase of 189.

Royals bought him at his base price of INR 50 lakh (approx USD 77000) - Klaasen was unsold at the player auction in January - to fill the void left by Smith, who was barred from playing all international cricket, and domestic matches in Australia, for 12 months by Cricket Australia.

Royals will also be wary of the situation around Ben Stokes, who is due to be in court to challenge a charge of affray. The IPL will allow the franchise a replacement player for the England allrounder only if he is ruled out of the tournament before it begins as a result of the legal proceedings.

Tom Curran replaces Starc in Kolkata Knight Riders squad

Surrey and England fast bowler Tom Curran has signed up for Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2018. It will be his first time in the tournament after he was announced the replacement for Mitchell Starc, who was recently ruled out with injured right shin. Curran is expected to join the Knight Riders squad before their first match on April 8 against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"I'm thrilled and excited to be joining Kolkata Knight Riders for the IPL," Curran was quoted by the Surrey website. "I know from chatting to other players I can learn a lot from being in that environment, skills that I hope will benefit Surrey and my chances of representing England again this year and if selected, for next year's World Cup."

Although he does not bowl express pace, or left-arm, Curran's skills include a deceptive, back-of-the-hand slower ball, and a superb yorker. He used both of them to good effect to pick up a maiden five-wicket haul in a thrilling ODI against Australia at the new Perth Stadium in January.

Curran was a hit in his first T20I as well, taking a wicket with his second ball, against South Africa last June. He is also a handy lower-order batsman, with a strike-rate of 128, accumulated over 51 T20s, and a highest score of 51 not out. Curran is the 11th player from England to take part in the league after Alex Hales was recruited by Sunrisers Hyderabad two days ago. He joins a promising brigade of young fast bowlers in the Knight Riders squad alongside Under-19 World Cup winners Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti.

The new-look squad is, however, expected to regain some of its old flavour with KKR chief executive Venky Mysore claiming opening batsman Chris Lynn and allrounder Andre Russell should recover in time for their opening game which they will play at home.

I don't think so Klaasen was in IPL list which was sent for Auction table... But RR have struck a superb deal..
