uttermost
nobody cares about stats, mr tennislvr. sachin was hyped as the next big thing when he was 16, and he almost lived up to it. kohli's backstory isn't that fantastic. He came up through hard work. just look at how he was struggling upto 2013. Sachin never struggled. Sachin is Spartan hero, and later became a boring workhorse. Kohli started off like a complete dud, and is now scoring heavily, but still something about him is missing.

uttermost
mr.tennislvr, you don't understand the psychology of a fan. Why was Agassi so hyped up even when Sampras overpowered him in the mid 90s? sure, stats can be useful to claim someone as greatest, but people's hearts are won through something else. I don't know. may be virat kohli is very popular. my 7yr old nephew thinks he's cool. though I didn't press him what he meant by 'cool'. When Sachin was captain he didn't get team he wanted.. team he got where mostly fixers.. But still he managed to win the matches single handedly. People look at Sachin failures only.. in current odi team we have Rohit, Rahane dhawan , pandya, pande and dhoni who perform even if Kohli fail. Back then if Sachin fails..jadeja Azhar are the only hope and both where fixers. What a joke, this is the usual sh1t Sachin worshippers peddle. It's true that while the team was going through a transition phase, outright calling people like Jadeja and esp Azharuddin who's one of the most legendary Indian captains and players is outright disrespectful. While he did involve in match fixing to a certain extent, it's not true that he consistently failed to perform all the time when the team needed him the most. Also in tests starting in 1996 we have had both Ganguly and Dravid(who's the greatest Indian batsman of all time in test matches) stepping up to play for the side. Ganguly was the best batsman in the world in ODIs starting from 1997 Sahara Cup in Toronto against Pakistan till the 2001 Australian tour of India when he fell out of form and never quite captured the dominating form he displayed for the past 4 years. So the usual sh1t that Sachin was the lone savior for the team was more of a Sachin fanboys creation and has to be taken with a lot of salt. Comparisons happen all the time, making a comparison itself doesn't mean that the mentality is wrong. Even the players themselves set targets to achieve based on the achievements of the past players so the mentality is nothing to rage about. While one may not conclusively state that one particular batsman of a particular era isn't necessarily greater than another one in a different era, it's totally okay to state why you would think so. And in Kohli's case he proves it. Bowlers of this era, hmm think about Dale Steyn, Michelle Johnson who are all very accomplished bowlers. It's about the time frame his dominance in ODIs started in the late 90s and continued upto the early 00s.
