Mikhail Bakunin, an activist born in Russian royalty. Karl Marx ni oka aata aadukunnadu, vaadi theories anni thooch ani cheppi. he literally created the revolution in europe (against monarchy), at which time he was the most popular libertarian in Europe. more popular than even Marx, who later became popular because govts of Russia and East Germany appropriated his work, and built a bullshit republic. Russia had one of the largest funeral procession at the time of Bakunin death, even when he did not hold any office.

Peter Kropotkin, again Russian royalty, who was a scientist, and revolted against Russian monarchy after he saw how prisoners were treated in russian prisons. He was jailed, and then escaped into Germany, where he became an activist, and came back to Russia when Tsar monarchy was overthrown by the bolsheviks. He had one of the most amazing welcomes in Russian history when he came back. but after a while, everybody kept away from him, because he was far more radical than anyone, and despised the communist party.

I bet Bhagat Singh, and to an Subhash chandra bose were examples of extreme popularity in India. Subhash was probably boring and a authoritarian crackpot. Bhagat Singh, and his comrades were inspirational to an entire generation of Indians. Just wish bhagat singh wrote more, so right wingers wouldn't appropriate him.
