Dallas police discovered an illegal cockfight Sunday morning at an abandoned building in southeast Dallas.

An officer was patrolling in the 10400 block of Cory Street, near U.S. Highway 175, and saw several vehicles and individuals fleeing, police said.

The officer called for backup, and authorities determined a cockfight had been going on.

Officials found 51 live roosters at the property, as well as two dead birds. Three of the roosters had severe injuries and had to be euthanized, SPCA spokeswoman Maura Davies said.

Two people were detained, police said.

Photos taken at the building by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals show a ledger, wooden boxes and roosters in metal cages.

The SPCA was called to help Dallas Animal Services with the birds, which were taken to a secure location. The SPCA will gain custody of the roosters if they are not claimed within three to seven business days.

"One of the saddest parts when fighting roosters are seized is there is really not a way to rehabilitate them ... and they will likely be euthanized," Davies said. "These roosters were failed by people who were using them for illegal activities."
