This is a test demonstration flight. If this is successful they plan to carry materials for commercial satellite operators. This is a heavy rocket, meaning it can hold larger materials which obviously is a great deal. As you know, lifting a gram weight to space costs lot of fuel and in-turn associate heavy price tag. He is trying to demonstrate cost effective rockets, they can reuse multiple times. In the past, if a rocket is launched to space, after the boosters done with their job, they fell into ocean (they are trashed). But with space X he is attempting to bring back the boosters to launch pad (obviously at a farther distance) to land safely and reuse them in the next mission. It saves lot of money.

As you know, both SpaceX and Tesla owned by Elon Musk. He customized the Roadster to roam around Mars Orbit which monitor the orbits details & will be his bigger mission to send humans to Mars. So he is investing into it now to learn more about it. 

It doesn’t make any sense for him to send a ford car when he owns Tesla.
