Getting axed is inevitable if the client doesn’t see value in the project they are doing. Working hard to trying to create a dependency out of you isn’t healthy and professional. I don’t really favor this approach just because I fear losing a job.

And, there is that! No client would keep a contractor or even an FTE in the US if there is no work. That may work in countries like India (workplace politics/influence/etc) but not in the US.

I did not advise to work hard to create unhealthy dependency on us. Some FTE's do that, gain business knowledge, withhold that info for themselves and not share it, etc. That is called vertical/domain knowledge which is limited only to that company or line of business. These people are GENERALISTS - jack of all trades and master of none. As an analogy, this is like adding more resources/space/memory to the same server for scaling a website.

Contractors bring horizontal knowledge to the table - technical skills, languages, databases, tools, etc. These skills are transferable - you could take them and go work for ANY client because you know the tools of trade. A good example of this is sales people who have horizontal knowledge - they could be selling vacuum cleaners today and selling software tomorrow because their skills are transferable. These people are SPECIALISTS - they are good at hitting the ground running and crushing things. As an analogy, this is like adding more servers to a website for scaling. This is what I meant one should aim at mastering - become the GO-TO guy for expertise.

No one can stop us from learning new things and gaining horizontal knowledge - it won't create an unhealthy environment and there is no fear of losing job with it because you can always find another - just like that. Whereas access to vertical/domain knowledge may be restricted/withheld, gaining it could result in an unhealthy environment and you have the fear of losing job because you can find another job only in the same industry.
