It is an issue of ambiguity.  Two ways to resolve it: either by convention (or conventions coded by formal grammar, which is what compilers do; or by add parentheses.

When there is a fight, it is an issue of disagreeing with others' conventions. Not a big deal, since conventions don't help produce knowledge.
