Health ministry says no community transmission in India so far

The Health Ministry on Thursday said that India had not reported community transmission of the novel coronavirus so far. "These things create panic in the minds of people," Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal said. 

Regarding speculation of a lockdown as a measure to curb the spread of COVID-19, he said, "Lockdown is a very inappropriate word; governemnt effort has been to prepare for evolving global scenario. Our measures started on 17 January. To err on the side of caution will help us."

All restaurants to be shut in Delhi: Kejriwal

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said that all restaurants in the National Capital will be shut in a bid to urge people to stay home as authorities take measures to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. However, he said, that the take away and home delivery services will be available.

"10 confirmed cases have so far been reported in Delhi. Of which, two have been cured. We have 768 beds for quarantine purposes, of which 57 are occupied. We have 550 isolation beds," Kejriwal said.

EU chief Brexit negotiator tests positive for COVID-19

Michel Barnier, the European Union's chief Brexit negotiator, on Thursday said that he had tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Last week, the WHO declared Europe as the epicentre of the flu-like disease that has claimed more than 9,000 lives worldwide.

Over 20 people won't be allowed to gather in Delhi

Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said, "Twenty or more people will not be allowed to gather at any place for social, cultural, religious, academics, seminars, conferences purposes in the state." Earlier, 50 or more people were not allowed to gather.

Aviation ministry says 201 Indians evacuated from Iran

The Aviation ministry on Thursday said that a batch of 201 Indians were brought back from Iran on Wednesday. The MEA had informed the Lok Sabha that 276 infected Indians were stranded abroad, including 255 in Iran.

Kashmir under virtual lockdown amid COVID-19 scare, says report

The Kashmir Valley is under virtual lockdown as a measure to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus, The Economic Times reported, adding that markets and public transport were shut in Srinagar.

"Authorities scrambled through the previous night to come up with a strategy to contain the spread of coronavirus in the valley," the report.

First COVID-19 reported in Mexico

Mexico on Thursday reported its first coronavirus-related death as the global toll from the infection crossed 9,000. Reports said that the victim was a 41-year-old resident of Mexico City. "The man, who suffered from diabetes, first began showing symptoms of the virus on 9 March. Reports say he had not previously visited any countries that have had outbreaks of the virus," News18 reported.

Italy's COVID-19 toll poised to cross China

The Chinese city where the corona virus first took hold reported no new homegrown cases on Thursday, while the toll in Italy was poised to overtake that of China in a dramatic illustration of how the outbreak has pivoted toward Europe and the United States.

The worldwide toll crept toward 10,000 as the total number of infections topped 2,20,000, including nearly 85,000 people who had recovered.

Italy, a country of 60 million, registered 2,978 deaths on Wednesday after another 475 people died. Given that Italy has been averaging more than 350 deaths a day since 15 March, it’s likely to overtake China’s 3,249 dead — in a country of 1.4 billion — when Thursday’s figures are released at day’s end.
