Medical researcher from Washington succumbs to COVID-19

Professor Stephen Schwartz, pathologist and godfather of modern vascular biology, has passed away due to the novel coronavirus, according to a tweet from the University of Washington, Medicine department. 

Schwartz was a professor of pathology since 1984, according to the department’s biography, with a focus on vascular biology, CNN reported.

Andhra Pradesh reports second positive case; infected person returned from England on 15 March

A second positive case of coronavirus was reported in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, taking the total to two. "The youngster who returned from England on 15 March tested positive for the deadly virus," the state Health Department has said.

"The patient has been admitted to an isolation ward in RIMS at Ongole and his condition is stable," the department said in a release.

He was admitted to the government hospital after complaining of fever, cough and cold.

15 more test positive, total tally at 166

According to the Health Ministry, 15 more positive cases of coronavirus have been reported in India since Wednesday, taking the tally to 166 so far. The total number of confirmed cases includes 141 Indian nationals and 25 foreigners.

Till now, 15 individuals have been cured while three have succumbed to the disease. More than 2,00,000 people worldwide have been infected and over 8,700 people have died.

Chhattisgarh reports first confirmed case after London-return woman tests positive 

A 24-year-old woman, who had recently returned to Raipur from London, has tested positive for COVID-19, making her the first confirmed case in Chhattisgarh, health officials said on Thursday.

The woman and her parents, who reside in the state capital, have been admitted to an isolation ward at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Raipur, they said.

"The woman, who studies in London, had returned home via Mumbai airport on 15 March. After she complained of cold and cough, her sample was collected for testing on 17 March," Medical Superintendent of AIIMS Raipur Dr Karan Peepre said. Her sample tested positive for the infection late Wednesday evening

Chhattisgarh equipped with treatment capacity of 450 patients, says state health minister TS Deo

Tribhuvaneshwar Saran Singh Deo, Health Minister of Chhattisgarh, said the state has the capacity to treat 450 patients infected by the novel coronavirus. Deo further said the state was equipped to quarantine 1,500 patients and another 60 hospital beds have also been facilitated in this regard.

The state health department also formed 'First Rapid Response Team' on 27 January and started issuing advisories for awareness. 

"Till date there has been no confirmed case of coronavirus in Chhattisgarh, yet I want to reassure my people that we are fully equipped to deal with any eventuality. I request you all to be cautious and follow all the necessary precautions. We are in it together," tweeted Deo.

Setting aside political differences, Kerala government and opposition unite to contain COVID-19

Amid coronavirus outbreak, Kerala government and the opposition have shown unity and come together to fight the crisis together. Setting aside their political differences, Kerala chief minister and Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala have decided to hold a joint press conference addressing the local self government heads on how to manage the coronavirus pandemic.

Pinarayi, who has been hailed for his efforts to manage and curb the fast-spreading virus, reviewed the preparations taken by the state against the pandemic and stressed upon the need to tighten vigil. Kerala has reported the second highest confirmed cases. Pinarayi, along with health minister KK Shailaja, has held daily press conferences at 7pm for the last 8 days.

Kerala has already reported 25 positive cases and home quarantined 17,743 people so far. Besides, around 18,472 people are under surveillance, of which 268 are undergoing treatment in hospitals.

Uddhav Thackeray urges people to stay indoors amid virus scare 

Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray today urged citizens to stay indoor. "Please try to remain indoors as far as possible, avoid all unnecessary commutes or travels and exercise precautions at all times," said Thackeray.

Seeking people's cooperation in the "war against a virus", Thackeray said that after an appeal made by the government, the number of people visiting public places and using public transport system has gone down. He, however, said that it must stop completely.

"This is a war against a virus and we can win it with determination and not by getting frightened or creating panic," Thackeray said in his 10-minute-long televised address.

Mumbai AC local train services to be suspended from tomorrow

As the number of coronavirus cases touch 49 in Maharashtra, Western Railways decided to cancel AC local services in Maharashtra from Friday. The AC local trains will be replaced by non-AC suburban trains till 31 March, said Western Railway PRO.

The most urbanized state in the country has reported nearly 50 cases so far. Maharashtra is the worst affected state amid coronavirus outbreak in the country.

Confirmed cases in Maharashtra at 49

The total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Maharashtra has reached 49, said Rajesh Tope, State Minister of Public Health and Family Welfare.

"Two patients who have been tested positive for coronavirus are on ventilator at Kasturba Hospital, Mumbai," said Tope.

Six passengers with 'home quarantine stamp' deboarded from Saurashtra Express

The six passengers who returned from Singapore recently and have 'home quarantine stamp' on their hands, were deboarded from Saurashtra Express at Borivali Railway Station today, according to Public Relations Officer (PRO), Western Railway.
