man...Jupiter is crazy. throws meteors and comets at earth and sometimes pushes them away into interstellar space.

it did not like the dinosaurs.

Actually, Jupiter is protector of inner solar system.  Most of the meteors come from kuiper belt or oort cloud. Due it's massive gravitational field, it takes most of them saving the earth and other  inner planets. Recent example : Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9.  Very few of them will be thrown at us due to Jupiter's gravitation assist. For gravitation assist (sling shot) to work, those meteors have to be at specific orbit with certain velocity and specific angle towards earth. The chances of that is very slim.

Yeah, Jupiter is crazy and is scary planet too. A failed star.

well it distorts the path of comets and one can come crashing in future and we might have very less head time. does not need a sling shot boost for that.

when someone asks me why we need space programs as they are expensive - i tell them that space tech in future will protect earth from meteor or comet and then ppl can thank these programs for saving humanity. we can change the fate of a race.
