Surat Police says protesting migrants have been given food

DCP Surat on Tuesday said that protesting migrant workers in the city have been given food.

He said, "Labourers gathered and wanted to go back to their home states. We explained to them that lockdown is extended so no vehicular movement is possible. They also complained that they're not getting food. We called an agency which is serving food. We're requesting people to take it."

 

Surat migrants out on streets for second time in less than a week

Migrants working in the textile industry in Surat on Tuesday protested by squatting on roads in the Varachcha area of the city as Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the nationwide lockdown which was coming to an end today, will now be extended till 3 May. This is the third such incident of migrant workers taking to the streets in Surat since the lockdown began, Hindustan Times reported, and the second such incident in less than a week.

On Friday, 81 people were arrested for violating lockdown and on charges of rioting in the city. "The workers resorted to violence after many of them were not paid their salaries for March and also denied permission by the authorities to go back to their native places," the report said.

The protesting migrants allegedly resorted to arson and vandalised vegetables carts and other shops in the Laskana area in Surat

Maharashtra govt says will take action against those behind rumours about trains

Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh said that strict action will be taken against those who spread the rumour that trains will start on 14 April. His statement is regarding the situation that occured at Bandra station on Tuesday evening, where in hundreds of migrant workers thronged to the station demanding to be sent home.

Why are you afraid, we will fight the battle together: Maha CM Uddhav tells migrants

"Why are you afraid. We will fight the battle together. They [Migrants] thought that trains will start [Today]. Someone may have started the whisper campaign. I'm also speaking to the Centre. The Moment lockdown is over we will help," Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said.

Maharashtra govt says misinformation about trains was spread in 11 different ways

Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh said that misinformation regarding the commencement of trains from 14 April at the end of the first phase of the COVID-19 lockdown was spread using 11 different methods.

"The accounts have been tracked, FIRs are being filed and due legal consequences will follow," he said.

 

Marathi TV journalist arrested in connection to Bandra situation yesterday

ANI reported that Rahul Kulkarni (a journalist with a TV channel) has been arrested in connection with Tuesday's gathering in Bandra. The Mumbai Police said that "he is accused of spreading misinformation about trains being restarted. He'll be produced before court on Thursday."

Mumbai Police arrests 11, including scribe, in Bandra migrant workers' protest 

The police have arrested a total of 11 persons including a journalist with regard to the crowd of migrant labourers which gathered in suburban Bandra on Tuesday, officials said.

The police have registered three cases in connection with the incident so far.

In the first case, registered against the mob of around 800 to 1,000 persons for unlawful assembly, rioting, violation of prohibitory orders during the lockdown, nine persons were arrested on Wednesday.
