India is definitely not in community transmission stage yet, says ICMR

NEW DELHI: Less than 1% of India’s population has been infected by coronavirus, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said on Thursday, as it reiterated that there was no community transmission yet in the country.

Releasing the findings of its sero survey conducted across 83 districts in 21 states, ICMR director general Balram Bhargava said 0.73% of the population showed evidence of past exposure to new coronavirus and a significant portion of the population was still susceptible to Covid-19.

Urban slums were found to be most at risk with 1.85 times higher prevalence of the disease than rural areas. Urban centres as a whole reported a prevalence that was 1.09 times higher than villages. “I want to emphasise that there is no community transmission in India yet,” Bhargava said.

Nearly 26,400 people in 28,595 households were tested for this study. The survey found that the fatality rate was very low at 0.08%.

Bhargava said the second part of the survey, which was to estimate the size of population that has been infected with SARS-CoV-2 in containment zones of hotspot cities, was still ongoing.

But people familiar with the findings of the study said that it showed that 10-35% of the population living in the containment zones had got infected and become immune. The cities that were a part of the survey included Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata, Indore, Thane, Jaipur, Chennai, and Surat.

“The good news is that in the containment zones a significant proportion of people has tested positive, which means that a large proportion has already got the disease,” a person familiar with the matter told ET. “All hotspots show different levels of positivity. The proportion varies from 10-35% in these zones,” he said.

Another person said the survey in containment zones showed that large percentage of infections were mild or asymptomatic. “The disease is heterogeneous in nature. The top cities have a large number of people who got infected and recovered. For the rest of the country, this doesn’t hold true. The disease is in a nascent stage and still vulnerable,” added this person.
The sero-surveillance study tests for the presence of virus-fighting antibodies that the immune system produces to fight off an infection.

Detection of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 means that the person tested has been infected with the virus, and indicates the stage of transmission of the disease.

Niti Aayog member VK Paul said the survey shows that the lockdown has been successful in preventing rapid spread. “A large proportion of the population is still susceptible. Urban slums are highly vulnerable for spread of infection,” he said.

Health ministry joint secretary Lav Agarwal said the recovery rate in the country was 49.21%. He also said the the number of patients who recovered at present exceeds the number of active patients in the country.

Just now, reality said:

What fcuk does he think community spread is... such bunch of idiots..

he cleverly talked about sero survey over all of India and said only 0.73% population that had antibodies ani..

earlier surveys done in delhi, mumbai, ahmedabad specific localities have shown 40% possible infections.
