HYDERABAD: Thanks to more than 2 lakh students currently enrolled in social welfare and tribal welfare residential schools and colleges all over the state, but now staying at their homes in villages due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the villages are now witnessing these young students teaching their younger lot to ensure that the latter do not suffer any break in the learning process.

The older students started forming village learning circles (VLCs) and teaching the children in their villages. The aim of these VLCs is to ensure that the poor students do not lag behind when the schools are reopened because those children whose parents could afford online education come equipped with the subject.

Telangana, it can be recalled, has been in the news for recording phenomenal academic progress in its social welfare and tribal welfare residential educational institutions. The students of these institutions are now applying at the VLCs the innovative methods in which they were taught in their schools or colleges.

RS

Praveen Kumar

, secretary of

Telangana Social

and Tribal Welfare Residential Educational Institutions, who steered these institutions into becoming centres of excellence, is behind the idea of VLCs. Though children were enjoying an extended vacation, he foresaw a problem that is going to cripple to them in the form of digital deprivation in the days to come. His answer to this problem is. His call was so powerful that his students started forming VLCs in thousands of villages. They are choosing mostly community halls and common facilities to teach the children in their villages.

According to Dr B Venkat Raju, content manager, social welfare residential institutions, the number of VLCs would soon touch 50,000 and each of these VLCs are teaching around ten students. Efforts are on for enlisting of support of villagers, local authorities for ensuring minimum facilities at VLCs and also social distancing, sanitizers, etc.
